Dr. Jonathan D. Hughes bridges elite clinical care and academic research — a combination that shapes every diagnosis, every surgical plan, and every recovery he guides.

Dr. Hughes is an expert in sports medicine and complex knee and shoulder procedures, including arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and reconstruction. He earned his MD at UT Health Science Center San Antonio, completed residency in orthopaedic surgery at Baylor Scott & White, and completed his fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery at UPMC / University of Pittsburgh.
He also holds a PhD from the University of Gothenburg, where his dissertation examined how surgical technique and bony morphology influence ACL failure — research that directly informs how he operates today.
A recognized academic leader, he contributes to AAOS, AOSSM, AANA, ASES, ISAKOS, and the ACL Study Group, with more than 200 publications and a deep commitment to medical education.

Dr. Hughes has mentored more than 50 undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, residents, and international research fellows. He leads hands-on arthroscopy and joint replacement labs for sports medicine fellows, serves as an engineering faculty mentor guiding biomedical device design teams, and supervises advanced research — including a PhD dissertation using machine learning to predict outcomes after ACL reconstruction.
